As the leader of the 1970s country pastiche group the Texas Jewboys, author of many best-selling mystery novels, and a candidate in the 2006 Texas governor`s race, Kinky Friedman possesses considerably more interesting material than most prospective political candidates. Friedman is a past master at Jimmy Buffet-style anecdotal humor, but for this collection of stories, personal history, homespun philosophy, and hilarious cultural observations, he allows himself to get a little more serious on the subject of politics, and why he`s entered the electoral fray (his answer, which soon becomes his campaign`s theme: Why the hell not? ). Whether Friedman succeeds in his state political bid or not, he remains an iconoclastic, larger-than-life figure, refreshingly open and free of cant, while exhibiting some apprehension that his campaign, begun more or less as a joke, is being taken seriously by more and more voters as election time draws near.
